Abstract
As the artificial intelligence program ChatGPT has been integrated into society, it has drastically impacted the educational world and provoked concerns about academic integrity, becoming infamously popular among students due to its quick ability to generate responses to any prompt. Correlational research and the critical incident technique, in the form of a survey and interviews, were utilized to understand how the program has impacted the standard of academic integrity for students aged 12-19 in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The results revealed that although students demonstrated a high standard of academic integrity, about half of the participants chose to utilize the program to complete school assignments. This research can open new conversations about the impact of ChatGPT in an academic environment, as these findings differed from those of previous studies which have not yet studied this demographic or have not focused on how student’s perceptions of academic honesty is reflected in their academic choices.
